2-second Toyota video causes headache for ABC News

Associated Press -- NEW YORK – For the want of a better two-second picture of a tachometer, ABC News has called into question its reporting on acceleration problems with Toyota vehicles.

The network's handling of a Feb. 22 "World News" story about potential problems with computer systems in Toyotas has created ethical questions and intensified bitter feelings the besieged automaker already had toward ABC.

ABC has admitted to a misjudgment and swapped out the brief dashboard video in its report, which continues to be available online. Its story illustrated a report by David Gilbert, a Southern Illinois University professor who suggested that a design flaw in Toyotas might leave a short-circuit that could cause sudden acceleration undetected by the car's computer system.

If FOX NEWS did such a blunder the liberal media such as ABC would be all over the story

The continued danger of such intensive media coverage - as each outlet tries to outdo the others. The fallout seems to be a lack of truth and integrity.

The news media objective is to provide the views with important information. Now, like other businesses, they do have a demand for making profit, and a lot of that money comes from commericailizing. Putting a comericail on does come with a price.

Now, one newsreporter said that they were instruted to exagerate the story in order to attract more attention. If this could happen on one TV news report, it could occure very often, espeically when the market is so low as it is today.

When I get news, it is read from something, like a web site or news paper. They can carry more detailed information. The only times I watch is when something big occures, like Superbowl, weather reports, and major events.

Cable news networks are much more trustworthy than the traditional news networks. I stick with Fox and CNN.

The story broke soon after Food Lion initially penetrated major Texas markets. They were doing fairly well until the ABC story hit, then they eventually had to leave the state. The nearest ex-Food Lion is now a self-store place. It's also just a few feet above the ocean and if Ike would have turned the wrong way their lockers would have had five feet of salt water saturating their contents.

Also, don't forget NBC's "Dateline" where they fixed up some Chevrolet pickup trucks to explode.

CBS also went after the accelerating Audis even though in this case the NHTSA couldn't find anything wrong.

The MSM frequently leaves a good bit to be desired. Disney (ABC), General Electric (NBC), CBS. Makes you glad you can get FOX on cable TV.

A Government Motors vehicle hiccups, nobody is surprised.

I bet if Toyotas were banned from our streets until the NHSTA was convinced they were safe then we would see some action.

Whoops, that's right, the NHSTA does think they are safe or says it does.

I was driving to the meet market in my Ford today to get some snack for basketball tonight when I saw this stupid Toyota behind me. Well, no one has told us when they are working correctly or not so I immediately stopped in order to help the Toyota come to a halt just in case it was a run-a-way. Damn thing rear ended me. Can you imagine that. Boy, Oh boy, I guess they do have braking problems ;)

Cop wrote the well endowed woman a ticket for driving an endangered vehicle. That is what he told me anyway. Probably was making a date with her.

No biggie. It's called literary license. Just a little manipulation to allow us to see the big picture. Doesn't change the fact Toyota is stonewalling their criminal conduct.

The fact remains, Toyota still has a serious problem, and a 2 second shot of a tach, is not going to correct the problem.

Instead of fixing the problem, Toyota is attacking ABC. So they showed a photo of the dash when the car was parked, vs moving down the road. But that does not change the fact that this Toyota car has a major flaw which has killed at LEAST 34 Americans. (probably more, since Dead people can't talk).

Why would anyone defend Toyota. They have a very Serious problem, They don't know how to fix it, and Proof is out that Toyota has known about this for many years, and has successfully covered it up till now.

If you want to drive a toyota and Kill yourself that's fine with me, but stay off the same roads that I am on, I don't want to get hurt/killed by one of these death traps flying down the road. They should ban all toyota sales, until Toyota truely fixes this problem.

I think Toyota is trying to distract us from the real problem. I knew right away when I saw the report that the car was NOT moving. Speedometer read zero. I just took it as a visual example of what happened. No big deal.
The problem is Toyota has a problem and they need to spend time on fixing it and not just their image they are so worried about.

Toyota and Toyoda knew about the problem and chose to down play it. Now they are being held to answer. I hope it cost Toyota and Toyoda Billions. They should think about safety instead of Greed.

Regardless of this, Toyota did everything it could to cover up the problem. They made their bed, it's time for them to deal with the consequences instead of continuing to deny the problem doesn't exist.

Good summary Manola 1. Sad when a 'professor' rigs the results, (how about the Global warming data as well) to make a good story. News doesn't do enough to research the data. I have been fooled by some emails that I have forwarded as true as well.

Whatever sliver of respect you had left for our nation's television media has likely been crushed in the last few days. Surely you've heard about David W. Gilbert, an automotive technology professor at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Gilbert said he could recreate unintended acceleration in a Toyota by short-circuiting the electronics. Trouble is, the way Gilbert created the "problem" included shaving insulation from wires and touching together wires that would never get close to each other in the real world.

Gilbert took his "findings" to ABC News, which swallowed the story hook, line and sinker, broadcasting Gilbert's story late last month. (No surprise there--exploding pickup fuel tanks, anyone?) Gilbert also testified before Congress, and I don't have to tell you that members' lack of car knowledge had them lapping it up.

Stating the obvious, Toyota said it would be near impossible for the professor's findings to just happen in a car on the road. Toyota's Kristen Tabar, general manager of electronics systems at the automaker's tech center in Ann Arbor, Mich., further refuted the professor, saying an automaker shouldn't have to design "detection strategies for artificially created events."

I couldn't agree more. She added that if Gilbert's short-circuit had happened in the real world, it would have left "readily detectable fingerprints."

For ABC News and our illustrious federal government to blindly lend credibility to Gilbert is little more than an unconscionable grab at headlines (witness one senator proposing a U.S. ban on all Japanese auto imports). Perhaps needless to say, Gilbert has gone silent and won't comment. That none of this surprises me is really sad.

I've said this before--I have no doubt there is a problem (or problems) with Toyota vehicles in need of proper investigation. But what it doesn't need is exactly what's happening: hysterics from consumers, television talking heads, and worst of all, the government.
