Energy Dept. offers prize to create mobile apps that already exist

The Daily Caller -- The Department of Energy announced Thursday a $100,000 prize for software developers to come up with mobile applications to tell consumers how much energy they are using.

But there’s already an app for that.

A quick scan of the iTunes and Android markets shows nearly two dozen existing applications that accomplish the same purpose — helping users keep track of their energy consumption at home.

The uMeter app, for example, allows consumers with Wi-Fi-enabled home energy meters to “manage and optimize their energy consumptions, in order to reduce their expenses and carbon footprint,” according to the description. Similarly, the Home Master app gives iPhone and iPad users the ability to control their lights and curtains from a mobile device.

“You can define lighting scenarios and get real

Not having a clue is not limited to Democrats.

I distinctly remember one of the President Bushes expressing curiosity at a perfectly common grocery price scanner.

What do you expect. People rarely work for the government unless they are very lazy or have already determined that they are incapable of earning a living at an honest job. That is why they throw so much money at companies that then go bankrupt.

Why does our government waste so much money. The American people need some relief and Obama's wasteful spending will ensure that the poor and lower middle class will continue to get severely punished for putting this dweeb into the White House. I thought Bush was bad but I had stable jobs, a house, and family, which I have lost during Obama;s socialist regime. I am NOT voting for this sarcastic heartless punk again.

So Jim, you're dumb enough to actually defend the feds and have time to make over 6,000 posts - where in the Federal Government do you work?

Products like this already exist in the market place, and have for some time. Everything from simple plug in meters that allow you calculate the amount of energy an appliance consumes (including what it costs you to operate) to fully programmable "smart meters) that allow you to see in real-time, what your total energy consumption is.

So why the prize?

Your tax dollars at work. This is why the government shouldn't be involved in anything but defense (the only thing they aren't trying to be involved in). Let the free market take care of the rest.
